This helps me focus on the key points and areas that might need clarification later.

  • Validate Emotions: Acknowledge the feelings expressed, letting the speaker know you hear and understand. Share a personal example: If a friend expresses frustration, I might say, "It sounds like you're really frustrated. That must be tough."

  • Ask Clarifying Questions: Seek deeper understanding by asking questions that invite more nuanced responses. I often check with the person if they mind me jotting down notes to ensure I capture their thoughts accurately.
