When God Gets Real With You

God: stop feeling sorry for yourself!

What do you do when you hear this? What would you do if, in the midst of anxiety and frustration, you hear God telling to stop feeling sorry for yourself?

You could do what most of us do when someone tells us this and say, “well you just don’t know.” You could retaliate. You could get upset and close yourself off to that person. But…can you really do that if that person was God? Would you really tell God that He just doesn’t know? Would you retaliate and close yourself off to him? Where would you go if you close yourself off to God? Last time I checked, he’s everywhere!

Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.

- Psalm 139:7-10 (NKJV)

So then what do you do when God tells you, “stop feeling sorry for yourself”? Recently I’ve been going through with the going through and it hasn’t been all that easy. There are days when I feel like I can conquer everything on my plate. Then there are days like this very day I heard God saying this to me; days when I feel like I can’t even get up because everything is overwhelming.

A part of me wanted to cry and tell God how difficult everything is for me but I already knew that he knows the pain. He has been through more pain than you and I have. He knows all too well about the heartaches, the anger, and the unexplainable pain we all have, are and will face. So then, what do you do when the one that has been through death, tells you to stop feeling sorry for yourself?

Well, I don’t think I would have to know exactly what I’d do if God had only left it there.

Stop feeling sorry for yourself! Stop doubting me. Stop letting your inability to control this situation cause you to doubt who is and who I am. I am that I am. I am here for you. I am your shield of truth. I am you helmet salvation. Salvation I would gladly give you over and over again. I am your breastplate of righteousness. I am your very shoes that hold the gospel of peace. I am your sword illuminates the Spirit within. I am that I am my love. I have you. We’ve got this. Nothing that is happening today is new to me. I knew all of this would happen and I chose to be there for you then just as I am now. Stop crying so much. Stop this nonsense of a pity party! Stop feeling sorry for yourself and start believing in me like you did when chose me to the love of your life. I am here and I will always be here.

Thank God for God, right?! Now I’m not saying that when life comes at you you’d ought to not feel all the emotions that come with it. We’re human and that is unavoidable nor is it healthy. However, we cannot sit in our tear and expect things to get better. We cannot just let struggles that come our way to overcome us. We have a race that leads us to heaven…we don’t get to stop running now. We’re just overcoming a hurdle. It’s time to stop feeling sorry for ourselves!

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints

- Ephesians 6:10-18

Pray this with me:

Thank you, Lord, for not giving up on me even when I have. Thank you for always reminding me that you are always with me and that as long as I have you, nothing will overcome me. Thank you for reminding me that you because you are I am that I am also able to conquer everything and then some more. Please remind me each day that you’ve got me. Please keep reminding me that as a soldier of your army, I have the ultimate armor, you. I thank you in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Until next time…
